Movie Physics

"So we give "The Mask" a rating of XP for the outrageous physics that are present in this movie. Obviously, the physics laws of another universe dominate this movie. If Isaac Newton had watched it, he probably would have had a heart attack. So watch "The Mask" with an open mind and for the sole purpose of being entertained."

Yes, that's probably a good idea. Who, though, goes to see a film with the purpose of 'learning about physics'?

"Later in the movie, Jareth is talking with Sarah and Hoggle, when he
tosses the ball down a hallway, and it changes into “the cleaner”. “The
Cleaner” is a huge machine that barrels down the hallways of the underground
labyrinth threatening the life of Sarah and Hoggle. Also, it has twirling
knives. Now how in the heck could a crystal ball change into some gargantuan knifey
thing that is being peddled by goblins. Not only does the ball increase in mass
and volume with no apparent exchange of energy, it also produces two animated
creatures an inanimate object. Terrible physics I tell you."

It is with indirect thanks to this post that I have today learnt the very wonderful word 'animadvert,' meaning to purvey pedantic criticism. I hope now to begin using it with gay abandon, particularly in such constructions as "Animadvert the animadverter" and "I was animadverting the other day..."

...so thanks for that.
